Night tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday, so opting for a weekday evening (especially Tuesday or Wednesday) gets you smaller group sizes and fewer families, adding to the quiet, immersive feel of exploring the island after dark.

Weekends (Friday to Sunday)

With ferries selling out much in advance, particularly for late morning and midday slots, the island is a lot busier over the weekend.

The Saturday night tour is a favorite among both tourists and locals, and often books out early. While it retains its charm, there are generally more people on the island than during a weekday night tour.

Peak season (May to September)

• This is the most popular time to visit Alcatraz Island, thanks to longer days, warmer weather, and better visibility across the Bay. The island gardens are in full bloom, and views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco skyline are typically crystal clear.
  
• Day tours during peak season offer the best light for photography and the most comfortable walking conditions. However, midday slots book up quickly, especially on weekends, so reservations are essential.
  
• Night tours are especially atmospheric in summer. Sunset timing varies, so early evening ferries often sail out during golden hour, giving you dramatic views both on the water and on the island.

Keep in mind: Peak season also means higher visitor numbers, especially in June, July, and August. The island doesn’t feel overcrowded, but you may have to wait your turn at popular photo spots and audio guide distribution points.

Low Season (November to March)

• Fewer visitors, shorter lines, and a quiet, contemplative atmosphere make the off-season a great time to explore, especially if you prefer avoiding crowds. Mornings can be misty, and the chill adds to the island’s moody vibe.
  
• Day tours in winter months tend to be slower-paced. The ferry ride might be brisk, but walking the near-empty grounds with fog rolling in makes for a memorable, cinematic experience.
  
• Night tours during this period feel even more intimate. With fewer people on board and deeper darkness on the island, the eerie silence of the Cellhouse is even more striking.

Note: Some areas of the island may close temporarily due to weather or restoration work, but the main attractions—including the Cellhouse—remain open year-round.
